At Doctor Duncan’s, we’re proud to be part of Liverpool’s history, just a stone’s throw from the iconic St George’s Hall. Named after William Henry Duncan, the UK’s first Medical Health Officer, our pub celebrates a man whose work laid the foundations for modern public health. Born and raised in Liverpool, Duncan studied medicine at Edinburgh University before returning home, where he was appointed Medical Health Officer on 1st January 1847—the first in Britain to hold such a role.
Our building dates back to 1901 when it was originally constructed to house Pearl Insurance. Over the years, it has had many identities—once known as The Earl of St John, with a nightclub called Rockford’s in the basement. During World War I, it also served as a Navy recruitment base. Today, we’ve embraced its rich history, restoring its stunning tiled interior and adding an authentic Victorian pharmacy cabinet in tribute to Doctor Duncan’s legacy.
We take pride in serving a fantastic selection of quirky real ales and craft beers, alongside classic British favourites, and a menu full of hearty dishes—including Scouse, Liverpool’s famous traditional meal. Whether you’re stopping by for a drink, a meal, or to soak in the history, we’re always happy to welcome you.
Doctor Duncan’s isn’t just a pub; it’s a part of Liverpool’s past and present. So come in, take a seat, and raise a glass to the city’s history while enjoying everything we have to offer.
